The European Hockey Federation run a number of indoor tournaments for clubs and nations.
National sides enter the EuroHockey Indoor Championships. The competition is arranged into tiers with promotion and relegation between each. The men’s competition is currently arranged into four tiers, with the Championship at the top, followed by Championship II, Championship III, and Championship IV in descending order. The women’s version of the competition only has three tiers at the present time.
There is a similar tournament for clubs, called the EuroHockey Indoor Club Champions Cup. This is also arranged into tiers with promotion and relegation between each. The tiers are called the Cup, Trophy, Challenge I and Challenge II in descending order. The women have a similar competition, although currently there is no Challenge II.
Qualification by English Clubs for the club tournaments is via the National Indoor Finals. The winning men’s and women’s team qualify for the following year’s tournament.
Past Winners of European Championships
The bi-annual European Nations Championships brought mixed results for England. The men finished seventh in the full Championships in Leipzig and are relegated to Championships II in 2014. England’s women move in the other direction after coming second in their Championships II tournament in Slagelse, Denmark. They are now promoted to the full Championships in 2014.
East Grinstead will be representing England in the European Indoor Clubs Championships in February. There are concerns that they will find the tournament tough going due to the absence of several key players on international duties. TalkHockeyRadio will be in Hamburg and results will appear on this web site.
The European Indoor Clubs Trophy will take place in Prague in February and England will be represented by Bowdon Hightown. Can the girls from Bowdon secure a return to the full Championships next year, when England will be represented by Leicester.
